Lot 890 2021 Suisun Valley Viognier

Lot 890 2021 Suisun Valley Viognier comes to us from a high-end source winery in the Suisun Valley AVA which has been producing Viognier for over 4 decades – more so than almost any other winery in the state. Nestled between the Vaca and Coastal Mountain ranges, the picturesque Suisun Valley boasts a unique microclimate and diverse soils that contribute to the production of exceptional wines. Known for its cool maritime influences and warm, sunny days, its particularly well-suited for growing both Bordeaux and Rhône grape varieties like Viognier.

For those of you looking to diversify your whites selection for the Summer, look no further than this fantastically expressive varietal. The aromatics of Viognier are second to none thanks to naturally occurring high levels of terpenes (the compound that gives flowers their alluring scents). Additionally, when it goes through fermentation, that floral character is so stable that it doesn’t change, resulting in a wine that not only has a great fruit core, but a beautiful backbone of florality which keeps it fresh and lively on the nose and palate. We were only able to secure 100 cases of this gem, so grab a case or two quickly before it’s gone!

Lot 890 absolutely leaps out of the glass with beautiful aromatics of white flowers, mandarin oranges, and white blossoms underpinned by white peach and warm apricot. On the palate, that intoxicating florality is backed by stonefruit notes of peach, apricot, and lemon pith leading to a wonderfully fresh, mouthwatering finish. This is a wine to drink now and will pair exceptionally well with spicy Asian dishes, grilled or decadent seafood, or something light and playful like a summer salad with fresh-picked flowers.

Lot 905 2020 Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

You’d be hard-pressed to find another Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon with this level of pedigree and power at this price tag, so grab it while you can because it won’t last long!

Sonoma Valley continues to impress us with excellent Cabernets that are somehow still flying under the radar, and today’s release, Lot 905 2020 Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon fits into that category like a mighty fist in a velvet glove.

Lot 905 was sourced from a well-known producer known for its Bordeaux-inspired, European-style reds. Nestled between the Sonoma Mountains to the west and the Mayacamas Mountains to the east, the source vineyards benefit from a diverse range of microclimates and fertile soils, producing wines that exhibit richness, ripe fruit flavors, and approachability. This is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot from their two vineyards, and spent 18 months in French oak (40% new) which gives this wine a rich, well-rounded structure. With yields down in 2020, you’d be hard-pressed to find another Sonoma Cab with this level of pedigree and power at this price tag, so grab it while you can because it won’t last long!

In the glass, it pours a deep purple with concentrated notes of raspberry, blackberry, blackcurrant, and cassis on the nose. On the palate, that rich black fruit is backed by graphite, grippy tannins, and judicious oak. This wine is still finding its own so give it a nice decant if you want to sip it now, or throw a case or two in the cellar for a bit as it has the structure to easily last another 10+ years.

Lot 887 2021 North Coast Petite Sirah

For some time now, Petite Sirah has gotten our vote as Northern California’s most overlooked, underrated red varietal. Even though it was first cultivated in the southeast of France (where it’s known as Durif, after the last name of its discoverer), it is rarely grown there. Instead, it prefers the drier climate of its adoptive home in sunny California—where most of the world’s Petite Sirah is now grown.

Today’s release, Lot 887 2021 North Coast Petite Sirah hails from a pedigreed source in the North Coast AVA in California – an area celebrated for its exceptional vineyards and distinctive wines. Stretching all the way from the San Francisco Bay to the Oregon border, North Coast is home to some of California’s most renowned wineries, encompassing several sub-regions including Napa Valley, Sonoma County, Mendocino County, and Lake County, among others. The grapes grown in this region benefit from its unique combination of coastal influences, cool maritime breezes, and diverse microclimates, creating ideal conditions to cultivate wines with fantastic structure and complexity, exemplified perfectly by Lot 887.

For those of you who may be new to the varietal, do not be misled by the “petite” in Petite Sirah for it refers only to the berry size, which is small and, when farmed in just the right way, produces a wine that combines intense fruit flavor, vivacious acidity, and dark color with big, smooth tannins. If you like concentrated, inky, dense reds, Lot 887 is right up your alley.

Lot 887 pours deep, dark purple in the glass with huge wafting notes of fresh-picked blueberries, bramble fruit, moist earth, and a kiss of leather. On the palate, intense dark fruit notes of blackberry and black raspberry are powerfully, but elegantly backed by rich, meaty tannins, leading into a long, mouth-staining finish with a beautiful acidity. Lot 887 will pair fantastically with any barbequed or smoked dishes or anything with those delicious umami qualities. A word of caution, however—If you’re having folks over and plan on serving 887, make sure you break open at least a few bottles as it is bound to go quickly!

Lot 889 2020 Lodi Zinfandel

A mouthwatering Lodi Zinfandel that’s juicy and vibrant and grown in an area famous for consistently creating gorgeous wines.

California’s Lodi AVA has been one of the world’s most consistent producers of world-class Zinfandel, creating instantly recognizable reds that are impossible not to love, vintage after vintage. It’s no wonder why the classified source for today’s release Lot 889 2020 Lodi Zinfandel, along with other major players like Cline, Turkey, and Bedrock have made Lodi the spot for their most important reds.

Historically, Zinfandel has been the most important varietal planted in Lodi (an area that often gets incorrectly categorized as a hot region, when, in fact, climatically, it is more in line with regions like Napa Valley), creating bold, bright expressions of the grape.

At just $16, this is one to grab a case or two of as it will pair marvelously with anything you pull off your grill, or just sip and savor on a warm evening on the patio.

Lot 889 pours a deep ruby-purple in the glass with mouthwatering brambleberry notes on the nose. On the palate, you’re greeted by juicy waves of blackberry, black plum, and a kiss of toasty oak with a vibrant, fresh, long finish.

New Release: Lot 888 2021 High Valley Barbera

A family-made, award-winning, everyday sipper that rises above the rest, offering more structure, color, and intensity than your typical Old World Barbera, and for just $15 a bottle!

Just when we’d thought that we’d seen it all when it comes to Barbera, along comes Lot 888 to make us reset our expectations of this versatile Piedmontese variety.

Barbera is native to the rolling hills of northwestern Italy, still, its vibrant red berry flavor has proven so immensely popular that plantings can now be found throughout Italy, as well as South America, Australia, Israel, Africa, and California. Despite its ubiquitousness, Barbera rarely sees the kind of treatment that Lot 888 brings to the table.

This 2021 Barbera was grown in an as yet still under-the-radar section of California’s Lake County called High Valley. This aptly named AVA houses Lot 888’s source winery’s well-draining vineyards, which sit over 2,000 feet above sea level. Volcanic deposits force the vines to grow deep roots in search of water, with complex berry flavor being the happy result. The cooler breezes retain Barbera’s already fantastic acidity, and the higher elevations promote thicker skin development to protect the grapes from the intense UV light at those higher altitudes.

All things considered, you’re getting a family-made, everyday sipper, that rises above the rest, offering more structure, color, and intensity than your typical Old World Barbera. Recently Lot 888 scored 98pts at the LA Invitational Wine Competition and earned both ‘Double Gold’ and ‘Best of Class.’ At just $15, this is one you’ll want to grab a few cases of, and quickly.

This Barbera’s high elevation source is abundantly evident in its richer, darker ruby color than would typically be found in Barbera from the Old World. Lively notes of violet petals, vanilla extract, and anise add enticing complexity to an inviting nose dominated by fresh red berries. On the palate, this Barbera is true to form, staying fruit-driven throughout with sour dark cherry flavors. These grapes obviously benefited from that famous Lake County sunshine, imbuing the wine with a full body that’s also buoyant and balanced, with great palate tension. Hearty pasta dishes, gourmet pizza, grilled veggies, and flank steaks can all be on the menu when this red is poured.

Cameron Hughes Lot 888 2021 High Valley Barbera placed very well in the recent 2023 Los Angeles Invitational Wine & Spirits Challenge scoring a Double Gold Medal, Best of Class, and a rating of 98 Points!

Lot 883 2018 Napa Valley Cabernet Franc

As you know, here at CHW we’re wild about Cabernet Franc. The parent grape to Cabernet Sauvignon, it’s stylistically a chameleon depending on where you find it in the world, ranging from pyrazine bombs out of Chinon to fully-fruited, oak-blasted Napa variations, and plenty in between. However, plantings are much more scarce than their more popular (and profitable) offspring, so it’s always a treat when our treasure hunt leads us to a worthy contender. And what a star we have here.

Released April 11, 2023, Lot 883 2018 Napa Valley Cabernet Franc was sourced from Napa Valley’s St. Helena and Pope Valley AVAs, and crafted by a winery with over 40 years of experience, and a list of accolades a mile long. While Cabernet Franc is lively, spicy, and contains a lot of minerality in France’s Loire Valley, Napa Valley’s Mediterranean climate provides a richer, more robust expression of the grape while retaining the peppery spice notes on the nose, and Lot 883 is the pinnacle expression of that new-world style. At over $60/bottle under the source winery’s label, it’s yours today for half of that at just $34.

Lot 883 pours medium ruby in the glass, leading with red-toned fruit laced with pine and cedar, dusty minerals, and a pop of purple florals. On the palate, juicy plums, cassis, warm boysenberry compote, and chocolate shavings are backed by velvety tannins framing the warm-spiced fruit character followed by a flourish of crushed cocoa nibs and coffee beans on the finish. With 5 years already in the bottle, this wine is absolutely singing and would be a fantastic addition to a dinner party, or break out the BBQ and pair it with your favorite grilled meat dish.

New Release: Lot 820 2020 Piemonte Gavi

Northern Italy’s Piedmont (Piemonte in Italian) is justifiably famous for its top-shelf reds: think Barolo, Barbaresco, and Nizza Barbera. Those big reds tend to overshadow the fact that Piedmont is arguably Italy’s most diverse wine region. After all, this is where Gattinara, Moscato d’Asti, Ruche, and Grignolino also got their start. And often, the same stellar producers who are crafting Piedmont’s loftiest reds are also crafting great sippers from its lesser-known varieties—making Piedmont’s white wines an extraordinary value.

Sitting right at the Ligurian border, Gavi was the first white wine to earn Italy’s top-tier DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) status, and Lot 820 displays in vibrant detail why that accolade is so well deserved. Sourced from a top winery in the Langhe district of the Piedmont region in the Northwest of Italy, Lot 820 is made from select vineyards with exceptional sun exposure and soil, with the Cortese grapes hand-picked at the end of September and undergoing a soft press and fermentation at 15-16°C for ten days. Made in a style of production that has hardly changed since 1876, this wine is an Italian classic and represents a terrific value at this price.

Since the 17th century, Gavi has been served alongside cuisine from Piedmont and Liguria, naturally creating one of northern Italy’s most versatile, food-friendly whites. With all of the minerality, wet stone, and citrus pith that this 2020 white is throwing around, you might think that you’ve found Piedmont’s drier, more sophisticated answer to high-end German Riesling. And you’d be right. Lot 820 pours a beautiful pale color in the glass with wafting notes of lemon pith, white flowers, and a wet river stone minerality. It might remind you of a bone-dry Riesling with those stony notes. It’s racy, eclectic, and vibrant and that wet stone minerality stands out as a bounty of mouthwatering acidity on the palate, accompanied by tart lemon and lime zest, and finishes long and lean with a saline edge. This wine will bring a refreshing element to any first course, serve as a dynamic palate-cleanser for rich casserole dishes, and it’s also ready for that delectable cheese course you prepared for dessert.

Lot 884 2018 Atlas Peak Petit Verdot

Small production crowd-pleaser from one of Atlas Peak’s best vintages of Petit Verdot.

We were thrilled when a sample of this powerhouse Petit Verdot arrived at our office late last year and after just one sip (there was no spitting this one back out), we quickly scooped up all 180 cases this very well-known producer had available. When you take your first sip, you’ll see why.

Today’s release Lot 884 2018 Atlas Peak Petit Verdot hails from the fabled Atlas Peak AVA in the Napa Valley, an appellation prized for growing grapes dating back to 1870 and stretching to over 2,500 feet high on the western slopes of Napa’s Vaca Range. The AVA is home to the likes of tiple-digit-priced Kongsgaard, iconic Antinori’s Antica winery, the legendary Stagecoach Vineyard (source of some of the region’s highest-scoring wines), and cult winery icons Hesperian and Alpha Omega.

In addition to the AVA, the 2018 vintage was one that Decanter raved “belongs in an echelon with the finest of the past two decades” for Napa Valley. The report added that “the best wines show control, poise, and transparency.” All of that coupled with the fact there were no-expenses-spared by the source winery with this Petit Verdot being coopered for 30 months in 100% French Oak (50% of that being new oak), this is a stunning expression of the varietal and one you’ll not want to miss out on.

Deep ruby-purple color. Knockout aromas of inky dark fruit, savory wild herbs, and flourishes of toasted cedar. Voluptuous on entry, overflowing with rich blackberry and red berry fruit compote, warm baking spices, dark chocolate, and dried sage and thyme. Firm tannins build with power as compelling acidity brings everything into focus. A lengthy finish is punctuated by white pepper, chocolate laced with cinnamon, and a touch of toasty oak.

Lot 904 2020 Sonoma County Chardonnay

Lot 904 Sonoma Chardonnay pours a rich, golden color in the glass, giving way to explosive aromas of lemon meringue, white flowers, and toasty oak. On the palate, soft and silky fruit flows in waves of yellow peaches, green apples, nectarines, and apricots drizzled in honey. Polished through and through this is a seductive Chardonnay with plenty of tangy acidity to keep everything fresh and lively while satisfying your craving for a ripe, oak-kissed Chardonnay raised under the warm California sun.

If you were to blind taste today’s release, you might think you were sipping something from Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, or even Chassagne-Montrachet. However, this beautifully crafted old-world expression of Chardonnay actually comes to us from a storied estate right here in Northern California.

Lot 904 2020 Sonoma County Chardonnay was sourced from a legendary producer that has been crafting world-class Chardonnay along the Russian River for decades. The maritime influence of the nearby Pacific imparts a Mediterranean climate to the region, tempering the warm, sun-filled days with cooler, foggy mornings and evenings, allowing the fruit to reach peak ripeness while preserving its natural acidity. The result is a balance between power-packed flavor and palate-pleasing freshness, yours today for only $16.
