How to Make Simple Carnitas…THE OFF GRID WAY

A perfect recipe for the fall.

Owen says it best: “Making carnitas is one of my favorite things to do, but I hadn’t cooked any since going off the grid and moving to a wood-burning cook stove. It worked perfectly, and heated the house too! Or maybe that was just the tequila, not exactly sure.”

Runnin’ Reds

So while most of us wake up at a decent hour to get our early morning gym trip, neighborhood jog/run, breakfast, shower, get the kids read for school, etc., Owen gets up at 3 am, catches a boat down the Kachemak Bay to China Poot Creek to dipnet for Reds on their run, then trek back and do the aforementioned ‘get ready for the day’ stuff we all do before work.  Makes morning traffic look like a piece of cake in comparison.

You Think You’re Tired?

Last week we saw Owen heat his home.

Then the question was raised about how the kindling situation comes together.

Choose anything we think is tough, then reverse engineer all the fine details, imagine you need to make, do, create all aspects of that without a hardware store down the road or across town…

Breaking Up Is Hard to Do

The majority of us take almost everything for granted and don’t even know it.  The list is endless when you have a base of comparison like Owen & Co.

We all can’t wait for summer’s warm weather and long days, but in Homer, AK, that means breakup.  The time when the ice melts and the ground is so saturated, it literally breaks up, and it is hard to deal with.

I…Was Trying to Lead the Way

If you live in any somewhat populated area, you’ve probably seen a plot of land cleared and houses developed on it in record time.  Teams of people over a few months can clear the land, lay new roads, put up one and two story houses, and then the realtors sell them off.  Most people hate moving (into their prefabricated track homes) and find it to be one of the more stressful endeavors.

Can you imagine if you had to do all that work with just you and your spouse (a kid and 2 animals in tow) all while working remote?

A (not so) long time ago in an Alaska far, far away…

When one thinks of remote work, most think about tech individuals all culminating in a café or shared workspace handling all manner of efforts away from the traditional office setting.

Owen apparently didn’t get that memo.

He literally thought remote.  Welcome to the last American frontier, untamed by man (until Owen wraps his hands around its neck), the drinking village with a fishing problem, the end of the road… Homer, AK.
