It is a very inert 3-dimensional carbon molecular structure that only reacts under fairly extreme thermodynamic or chemical conditions. It can be oxidized with extreme heat or electrical gradient (think carbon electrodes in arc lamps) or extreme chemical oxidizing conditions (strong acids).
