Warm Whiskey Hot Buttered Rum on a bar with various alcohol bottles in the background

It’s National Hot Buttered Rum Day!

National Hot Buttered Rum Day is celebrated on January 17th each year. Spinning off last week’s Hot Toddy Day, the next best thing you can drink in these cold, cold months is a rich, buttery, spiced rum beverage.

C’mon, what’s not to love!?

Butter, check.  Rum, check.  Spices, check.  Sweet beverage, check.  Hot beverage, check.

You get the idea…

There are plenty of stellar recipes out there, so choose the one that looks best to you, however, one point of note with making this amazing beverage:

Make sure your water (or cider) isn’t boiling hot when you pour it over the butter and spices!

Too many folks make this with boiling hot liquid which torches the spices and rum, rendering the drink slightly off and bitter.  Bring your liquid to a boil, then give it time to rest. You only need warm liquid, not scalding hot.  It may take some experimenting, but once you find the perfect balance of warmth to finished product, you’ll thank us for this tip.

Enjoy your butter drink today, and cheers!
